The story of Pfizer:
It's one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, makers of many much prescribed and used medicines. Its products run to A-Z, including Atorvastatin (brand name Lipitor to control cholesterol) to Zoloft (an antidepressant.)
Pfizer got its start in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York.
Two German-American cousins, Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart…
…launched a chemicals business that created a very successful drug that killed parasites invading the human body. A citric acid product kick-started the business and corporate headquarters moved to lower Manhattan.
By World War II, Pfizer was producing the now ubiquitous anti-biotic, penicillin and by 1950, Pfizer's development of another anti-biotic, Terramycin, led the company into pharmaceutical research. As it says of its brand roster today…
Their products include the EpiPen…
…and Viagra, for erectile dysfunction.
And the company still touts its medical research efforts.
The company maintains several research facilities across the United States and two in the United Kingdom and had assets totaling close to 170 billion dollars in 2015.
By the 21st century, Pfizer grew by leaps and bounds through a series of mergers with Warner-Lambert, Pharmacia and Wyeth.
But its Manhattan headquarters …
…are still just a subway ride away from the place where it all began in Brooklyn.
